For as long as I can remember, my father and grandfather have told me that the most important part of maintaining my car is to change the oil. Both of these men have pounded into my head that oil changes need to be done every 3 months or 3,000 miles.
As technology has advanced, even oil technology has evolved. We have far better oils available to us than our fathers and grandfathers had not all that long ago. Oil change intervals don’t need to remain at 3 months or 3,000 miles.
Every car manufacturer gives advice on the frequency recommended for oil change for the make and model of car one drives. Most automobiles these days have recommended intervals of at least 5,000 miles. Earlier this year, I purchased a brand new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, in which I use synthetic oil. The recommended oil change interval for my vehicle is 7,500 miles.

My recommendation for anyone wondering how often to change their oil is this: look in your owner’s manual. If you don’t have an owner’s manual, do a basic google search such as:
“How often should I change the oil in my [year] [make] [model]?”
And if you’re simply not comfortable with any recommendation longer than 3 months or 3,000 miles… well, father knows best, right? You won’t harm your vehicle by having the oil and filter changed too often. It’s okay to err on the side of caution and have the service done every 3 months or 3,000 miles.
I assure you, we won’t complain at having your business, so come on in!
